Besides diamonds, collecting power ups is a great way to travel longer distances as they will empower you with special abilities that cannot be obtained any other way. One of them being a meteor resistant shield which can be enabled when you have reached a sum of 100 diamonds. This will be displayed on the display in the upper right corner.
